The Night of the Hunter...

I really enjoyed this film, even though i was slightly bemused by some of the narrative and found it funny when it possibly should have been more serious. i found it hard to categorise this film into anyone genre, although felt i it was predominantely a thriller and film noir. it really reminded me of A Series of Misfortunate Events. I also thought the part in the cellar reminded me of a scene from Home Alone. But besides that, i was surprised with how much i enjoyed this film because there isn't anything really amazing, but i think the hybrid of genre, crossed with its narrative and cinematography really done this film some justice. It seems that reviewers and audiences, originally, praised the cinematography and Mitchum's performance, but The Night of the Hunter wasn't received well at all, to extent where it cost Charles Laughton's directorial career. Since then the film has become extremely well received and popular. it has since influenced many directors and has gone on to be the 71st greatest film in Empire Magizine's 500 greatest film's list.
