These thumbnails were based on how i wanted the rocks to look. whilst drawing these, all i could think of was The Lord of the Rings, where Frodo and Sam spend a lot of the film crawling between caverns and rocks. this seemed very similar to the situation of the two protagonists in this novel, so i looked into some of Alan Lee's work and some of the shots and cinematography from the film.
In the end, after looking into different rocks, i came up with six different ideas because i wanted to see which looked best. these just started as simple sketches with a black biro and as i started to give them some shadow and shading along with the composition, they started to come to life. some look better thans other and i tried a idea of a big cavern along with a couple of sketches for some smaller ones as i wasn't too sure how big this cavern actually was.
i will look at the other bullet points now, to design some more parts to my image so that i can bring them together and produce a great variety of prepatory concepts...
