Major Project... Hansel and Gretel...

Hansel and Gretel is a well-known fairy tale of German origin, recorded by the Brothers Grimm and published in 1812. Hansel and Gretel are a young brother and sister threatened by a cannibalistic hag living deep in the forest in a house constructed of cake and confectionery. The two children save their lives by outwitting her. My idea for an environment design inspired by the story, comes from an interesting piece of concept art by Donglu Yu. Donglu Yu takes the traditional concept of a gingerbread-style house and has created the concept for a vast enviroment hidden in the woods. Therefore, my idea would be to create an almost willy wonka-style, factory-like "kingdom" hidden in the woods that is used to entice the children to the wicked witch. I think it would only be right to stick to the traditional concept of sweets and food designs for the buildings and environment (however this could change after some more in-depth research), and this would give me a chance to get stuck in with some creative and quirky designs.

  1. Evening Ethan - hmmm, I still think that a City + Theme is the way forward, because, in design terms, there's just more surprise in it for you (and everyone else). I mean the idea of a city made of sweets could be great, for example - loads of fun; but you also need to be realistic, Ethan - your minor project started off being more ambitious than you were ultimately able to realise, so in terms of an environment design project, you'd be producing a series of assets to be combined to give the impression of a city - as opposed to literally designing and modelling all the assets at a 'city-scale'. I suggest you make a decision - and remember, you want to stay away from existing concept art and artists, because those images will haunt your own vision - and think about too what your creative methodology might be in terms of concept art; remember all that silhouette work you did etc. You need to make that part of the process much quicker, much more focused - you need to demonstrate greater confidence in terms of your pre-production quest. I suggest you hurry up and 'commission yourself' and be done with it.
